Additional Field Experience

Have worked on a dairy farm in Swan Lake Upstate New York where I have helped give birth to calves, milked approximately 600 dairy cows daily, and worked out on the fields. As part of my Animal Science Program, I worked at the Fresh Meadows Animal Clinic, as well as the Queens County Farm Museum on Union Turnpike in 96’.

Cardiorespiratory Unit

This unit was designed mainly for middle and secondary education. the intensity of the unit depends on your audience. In this case, the unit I posted was designed around the middle school level (Junior High School). This Unit is designed as a biathlon, where the students must jog a mile followed by some "jump-roping". It is an 8 lesson unit, and requires the students to progress in physical conditioning so they can complete the race.


Cardio respiratory
Endurance Unit

This is a unit plan for developing cardio respiratory endurance in students attending junior high school ( 8th grade level). This unit is designed for four weeks, meeting twice a week. The main objective here is to increase the cardio respiratory endurance of these students, as well as achieving bioenergetic, circulatory, respiratory, and musculoskeletal adaptations which will in the end, educate them on healthy living through exercise and keep them fit. This is a progressive unit, and consists of eight sessions. Each session will last approximately 50 minutes. By the eighth session the objective for the unit will be achieved.
PART A: 8 lesson-plan unit
Long-term Goal(s) of the Unit:
To have the students complete the “biathlon”, which consists of a 1 mile jog, and 5 minutes of jump rope. This will be accomplished by gradually conditioning the students physically, through various activities such as relay races and sport playing.

*NOTE: The gymnasium set up is as follows: 6 basketball courts on level 1, and a track on the upper level that circles around the gymnasium. (16 laps is equivalent to approximately 1 mile)
Attendance takes approximately 5 minutes of each lesson.
Students with asthma, or other health related issues who cannot participate in these activities will need a note from either the parent/guardian or doctor. Accommodations will be certainly be made. If the teacher should observe symptoms of health related problems, they will immediately advise the parents.


1) Lesson # 1: Cardio Respiratory Endurance: Track and Field

2) Specific short-term goals for the lesson: To have the students complete the relay races and jog around the gymnasium twice by the end of the lesson.

5) Activities and Equipment used: 5 batons, 5 volleyballs, floor mats, Radio
The first Game is called “Speedball” (Approx.15 minutes).(Same a soccer game).
The gym will be divided in half and there will be 2 games going on at the same time.(This is to avoid dead time)
There will be a total of 2 red teams and 2 blue teams.
2 goalies per game on each court.
The rest of the students get to be in the middle.
When the teacher blows the whistle, the students will have to run and get a volleyball from the center bin and run towards the goal bin to drop the volleyball inside.

The goal keeper must get the balls out of dropped out and toss them back to the middle of the arena to be picked up again.(students with asthma, or who are obese and cannot participate will be the goal keepers)
This will continue for approximately 15 minutes.
There is no score keeping so the students will just keep playing until the whistle blows.
The second activity will consist of a variety of sprinting races. (Approx. 15 minutes.)
Finally, the students will be asked to jog for 10 minutes non-stop on the upper level and come back down for the “yoga Cool-down” ( 10 minutes)
6) Cool-down (5minutes): Students will be on the floor mats, with music.
Students will follow the teacher’s cues during the yoga cool down.
Students stretch the muscles that were used during the lesson.
Breathing exercises.


1) Lesson # 2: Cardio Respiratory Endurance: Soccer
2) Specific short-term goals for the lesson: To add another lap onto the previous two from lesson # 1 as well as cardio endurance sports play.
3) Number of students: 50 ( 20 girls, 30 boys)
4) Activities included in the warm-up: (5 minutes)
Static stretches of the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles.

Jog in place for 1 minute.

5) Activities and equipment used: cones, yellow vests, red vests, 2 soccer balls.
The teacher will divide the students into 4 separate teams. 2 yellow teams, and 2 red teams.(20 minutes)
The gymnasium will be divided in half so there are two games going on at once. (this avoids dead time)
The students will play soccer until the 25 minute time limit is up. (Students may take a break at anytime they feel necessary for water or rest if the activity gets to intense.
Next, the students will be asked to go to the upper level to complete 15 minutes of jogging around the gymnasium. (10-15 minutes)
6) Cool-down activities: (5 minutes)
Students will cool down with a jog in place for 1 minute.
Students will stretch the muscles of the legs that were used for the day’s activities.

The First activity is to jump rope in place for 2 consecutive minutes (2 minutes).
The name of the game being played today is called “Taps” (15 minutes)
Teacher will divide the students into 5 groups of 10.
The object of the game is jump in the air, make contact with the volleyball (in the air) mimicking the “pass” in volleyball before landing back on the ground.
Each team is required to “keep it up” for at least 15 passes. (if the ball lands on the ground before 15 hits, the team must start over again)
Any player can make the “pass”
A student cannot self-pass.
First team to complete the race and sits will win.
Finally, the students will have to run 5 laps around the gymnasium on the second level and come back down for the cool down. (15-20 minutes)

Students will cool down with a jog in place for 1 minute.

2) Specific short-term goals for the lesson: Students will have to jog around the gymnasium 7 times as well as participate in the relay races for the day.

Students will be divided into 5 groups of 10.
First student of each line will be inside the potato sac. The objective here is to hop all the way to the other side of the gymnasium, come out of the sac and sprint back to pass the sac off to the next teammate.
The students will then go to the back of the line and have a seat.
(5 minutes)
First team to have all players their players seated wins.
Next, the students will jump rope for 3- 5 minutes.
Next, the students will go to the second level and jog the required time for the day. (20-25minutes)
After the jog, the students will have to jump rope for 3 minutes straight.

Students will cool down with a jog in place for 1 minute
Students will stretch the muscles of the legs that were used for the day’s activities.

2) Specific Short-term goals for the lesson: To complete the tasks on each station successfully.

There will be a total of 6 task stations (2 of each to avoid dead time).

25 students on the right side of the gymnasium (stations 1, 2 and 3), and 25 students on the left side (stations 4, 5 and 6).
Each student will be required to complete the required 3 tasks.
The first task is a10 minutes jog around the gymnasium.
The second task is to jump rope for 5 consecutive minutes without stopping.
The third and final task is to sprint back and forth for a total of 6 times along the designated line. (Approximately 40 minutes)

Note- The actual race will take much less time to complete as opposed to the previous lessons. This is mainly because during the previous seven lessons, we are working with “physical conditioning” as our goal. To get the body conditioned for an intense race like the biathlon, much work is needed to get to the point where a biathlon will be easier than it would have been before the unit.

The teacher will partner up all the students so that there are 25 pairs.
First 25 students will run the biathlon while the other 25 will asses them during competition. This will last approximately 20 minutes.
Nest the students will switch so that the ones who assessed will have a turn to participate in the Triathlon. (approximately 20 minutes)
The students who just finished will asses the ones who have not gone yet.
Assessment will be based on completion of each event in the biathlon and will be graded as a “Pass” or “Fail”. (see assessment sheet on back of unit)

6. Safety factors/reminders – No kicking of the balls, watch where you are hitting the ball. Aim for open areas.

Psychomotor Domain
- As a result of participating in the volleyball unit, students will focus on the underhand motion, and foot placement needed to serve the ball.
Cognitive Domain- As a result of participating in the volleyball unit, students will understand the history and rules of the game as well as learn the first skill which is the serve.
Affective Domain – As a result of participating in the volleyball unit, students will be working together sothey can learn from watching each other.
New York State Learning Standards Included in the Lesson
Personal Health and Fitness – Students will have to warm-up and stretch before the activities begin.
A safe and healthy Environment – students will be exposed to cooperative activities, which require feedback. The teacher will always be present to make sure there are no accidents or trouble with the students.

Lesson Focus- The focus of this lesson is the serve.
Instructional Procedure:

Execution of skill
· The ball is held at waist level.
· The player leans forward as they swing their arm forward and contact the ball.
· The hand holding the ball is dropped just before the contact.
· The player hits underneath the ball with the fist or heel of the hand.
· The hitting arm follows through in the direction of the target.

· Students will warm up against the wall with a partner and do underhand serving against the gymnasium wall. The partner who does not have the ball will watch and make sure the other student is performing the skill correctly.

Serving: Serving Relay

Objectives:Practice serving with some pressure.
1. Make two even teams per court..
2. The first player from each team serves.
3. The player must go and retrieve their serve.
4. If they missed their serve they must serve again, until they make their serve.
5. Once the first player makes a serve and retrieves the ball they can give the ball to the second server.
6. Continue until everyone has served.
Closing Statements – will go over the steps in serving execution briefly as well as take any questions that the students might have.
Reflection/Self Evaluation- should have paused in between segments to discuss the techniques showed in more detail.

Psychomotor Domain – As a result of participating in this lesson, students will be able to mimic the movements and form needed to execute a bump in volleyball.
Cognitive Domain – As a result of participating in this lesson, the students will understand that this is the first part of a three hit offense, and will understand that it is designed for a “set” in volleyball.
Affective Domain – As a result of participating in this lesson, students will be working together in squad formation so they can learn from watching each other.

· When students have completed this drill, they are to be seated. First team to finish will win.
· For the next drill will be each group will have to bump 10 times within the group. A student cannot bump two times in a row, however, with team effort the 10 bumps will be completed. First team to do so will win.

· Spread fingers in the shape of the ball above the head.
· Form a triangle with thumbs and pointer fingers (hands should not be touching)
· Place hands directly in front of the face close to the forehead. This position is called neutral and is always the starting position for the set.
· Game: “Hot Potato ball” (Approximately 20 minutes)
· The teacher will demonstrate what the set looks like and have the students repeat several times.
· Each student will be paired up with another. The teacher will pair the two randomly according to floor spots. (ex. A1 and B1; C1 and D1, etc.)
· The teacher will then hand out volleyballs to the students.
· The teacher will chose a volunteer to help in the next demonstration.
· The teacher will demonstrate both skills combined with the volunteer so that it looks like: (volunteer tosses, teacher bumps in the air, volunteer has to set, and teacher will catch.)
· The students will be paired up for this activity.
Activity: (Approximately15 minutes) “Bump n Pass”
· The teacher will demonstrate the bump followed by the set or pass.
· The teacher will demonstrate both skills put together ( the bump along with the set or pass)
· The students without a beach ball will receive one by the teacher.
· When the teacher blows the whistle, they will begin. (one toss in the air, bump, set, and catch)
· Each pair of students will attempt to complete this sequence 3 times.
· The first team to complete this sequence sits and wins.
13) Closing Statements- Again re-demonstrate the proper form of the bump along with the set, with and with out the ball and explain that this is the second step to an offensive play in volleyball. (Approximately 5 minutes)

Having a volunteer to demonstrate and monitors to help give out materials was a great idea. It kept students from becoming bored and gave them sense of responsibility.

Split the class in half, with each half on either side of the net. There will be two nets set up so altoghether there will be 20 students on each side. Have the balls spread out on one side of the net and get the students on that side of the net to overhead hit all the balls to the other side. Then repeat on the other side.
Aim of the Game: Practice controlled overhead hits
Rules:
· Hit the ball over the net into the volleyball boundaries
· Use the overhead technique
· When whistle blows, which ever side has the least amount of balls wins.
· Activity: (Approximately15 minutes)
13) Closing Statements- the teacher will go over the purpose of the activities as well as briefly demonstrate the spike. (Approximately 5 minutes)

· Students will be divided up by the teacher(s) into groups for the stations.
· Every 6-8 minutes, the teacher will blow the whistle and the groups will rotate in a clockwise direction to the next station.
· Stations will consist of serving, bumping, setting, and spiking.
· Each station will have a list of requirements to be completed by the students.

13) Reflection/Self-evaluation of teacher’s instructional effectiveness- would like to have the task stations though out a little bit more. I felt like the stations were not as fun for the students as intended.


1) Lesson # 6 – Volleyball Competitive game play
2) Grade level – grades 9-12
3) Number of Students – 80 students (40 girls, 40 boys)
4) Class time- 45 minutes
5) Equipment and Supplies Needed – 4 Volleyball nets, and 4 volleyballs
6) Safety factors/reminders – Proper attire must be worn at all times. Watch out for gymnasium hazards such as poles and bleachers.
7) Student behavioral objectives:
Psychomotor Domain-
As a result of participating in the unit, the students will hit the ball via bump, pass, and spike during the game.
Cognitive Domain- Students will understand the concept of using the three hits, (bump, pass, and spike) and apply them in game play.
Affective Domain – Win or loose, the students will respect each other and show sportsmanship during game play.
8) New York State Learning Standards Included in the Lesson
Personal Health and Fitness – Warm-ups and stretches will be done before the game to ensure no one pulls a muscle or gets a sprain.
A safe and healthy Environment – Since this will be game time, students will work in together offensively and defensively to win the game.
Resource Management – teacher will invite students who wish to play more volleyball to an after school program that provides students with a place to play.

11) Lesson Focus- To be able to determine when to use the proper skill during a volleyball game. This includes proper form and techniques. All skills should be incorporated in this lesson to achieve competitive game play.

· Students will be assigned to teams, and will play a competitive game involving all the skills and techniques required to properly play in a volleyball match.
· They will have to execute the bump, pass, and spike before the ball goes over the net to the other side.
the teacher will divide the students up into 8 groups for 4 official games.
The students will use all the skills taught to have an official volleyball match of 11 points.

14) Reflection/Self Evaluation- should have broken the students up into more groups and added 2 more courts for games.

My Interests

I am a nature boy and animal lover. Since early in my life, I have always had an interest of animals, nature, and preservation of habitat. I have many pets and have owned many exotic animals at one point or another. I also enjoy hiking as much as I do camping. I have always enjoyed being outdoors. Other interests of mine include traveling and food tasting. I am always willing try something new as far as food is concerned. My passion for cars has dwindled a bit but I do enjoy driving a good machine.
